Caleb is contentedly playing with his train set while singing Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the bed while Josiah is falling asleep in my arm – about ready for me to lay him in bed for nap time. I look at the two of them with unbelievable love in my heart. I’m filled with awe and joy over being their mama and, honestly, can’t believe anyone else could feel the way I do right now.
As much as I don’t want to admit it, I’m sure most of you have experienced this feeling too. You’ve had times you’re so wrapped up in love for your children and feel as though your heart could just explode! Love is a crazy thing.
Why is it that we parents adore our children so much? With all their craziness, insanity, and down-right obnoxiousness – how could we love them? It doesn’t make any logical sense. Especially when your child is three. (Oh, that’s just me?)
This is where God comes in.
Our Heavenly Father’s love for us is hundreds – thousands – millions – BAZILLIONS times larger than the love we have for our children but, in a small way, the love we feel can teach us about the love of God.
One of Nate’s favorite verses is in Exodus. Moses is talking to God on Mt. Sinai and asks God who He is. This is the only place in the whole Bible where God describes himself! He says “The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin.” WOW! God’s description of Himself is Love. Not only that God loves, as 1 John says, God IS love!
Becoming a mother and experiencing the love I have for my boys has brought me closer to the Lord. If I can love them so deeply, so fiercely, so unwaveringly… If I can love them regardless of what they do or don’t do… If I can love them selflessly… God can do it so much better!!!!!!! Why do I doubt the love of my Lord? Do I think I’m better than Him. HE IS LOVE ITSELF!!!!!!!!!!!!
Take a second and meditate on that. Your love is minuscule compared to His. That’s amazing grace!
What has being a mother taught you about God?
How focused are you on the love of God?
