The Struggle Is Real {AKA Diaper Changing Woes}
This little man may look all cute and innocent but he truly is the littlest stinker I know. He’s an active little monster… and when I say active I mean ACTIVE. This little man doesn’t stay in one place for more than about 15 seconds. He knows when things he’s not supposed to touch are within reach and pounces (read: cell phones, TV remotes, glasses…). His favorite room in the house is the bathroom and if we turn our backs for 2.2 seconds and the bathroom door is open we can guarantee he’s in there getting into trouble.
Worst of all, though, is diaper changing time!
Seriously, you guys, diaper changing is the biggest work out of my day! (And that’s saying a lot because I’ve started going to barre classes) Caleb flips and dips, squirms and wiggles as much as he possibly can! He relishes in the joy of movement!
Are you dealing with the same issues? I don’t have a ton of advice for you but here’s what’s worked for us so far…
Enlist Help
If you’re able to, don’t do diaper changes alone! Whenever Nate’s home the two of us do diaper changes together. One of use distracts the little man (or even holds him down when necessary) while the other one works on the diaper. Caleb is SO strong so it’s nearly impossible to keep him from going crazy by myself. The other day Caleb and I were visiting my sisters-in-law and one of them had to help me change a VERY poopy diaper since Caleb was squirming as much as humanly possible. Amazingly enough we didn’t get any poop anywhere, INCLUDING OURSELVES!!!! #Winning (Sorry to post that on the internet future Caleb)
Forget the Changing Pad
Sometimes the changing pad is just too much for a wiggly baby! It eases my mind a ton when I change Caleb on the floor because I know that even if he rolls across the room he’s safe. The changing pad is so high up and it makes me worry that he’ll roll himself right off and really injure himself. Safety is always my number one concern for my little wiggler.
Give the Baby a Toy
Sooommmeeetttiiimmmeeesss a distraction works for Caleb. When he’s in the right mood – wiggly but not TOO wiggly – I can give him a toy that he doesn’t often play with and it will keep him content long enough to get his diaper changed. This one is really hit or miss for us because often Caleb just isn’t interested and all he wants to do is move and shake.
Hold the Baby Close
This one works the best for us but is also the most scary. If I hold Caleb up against my body while sitting in a chair or on the floor and use all my strength to keep him still I can get his diaper changed in no time. This is the most dangerous piece of advice because you never know when your little one will decide he or she isn’t done… well, you know… I may or may not have had to change my clothes a few times after squeezing him in for a diaper change…
Change the Diaper on the Baby’s Tummy
Surprisingly, Caleb is so much more willing to sit still if he’s on his belly. When I’m just in the mood to let him be and work around him for diaper changes I’ll let him lay on his belly and change him that way. It takes a little learning to get the diaper to attach properly since he’s not laying the right way but, with learning, I’ve figured out how to attach the diaper and you can too!
