Confession time – I don’t enjoy watching sports… If I’m being honest, watching sports makes my head hurt. Sure, I understand the concepts of most games and can totally respect the talent of the players but I still don’t really enjoy watching. Thankfully I’m married to a man who’s only a social sports watcher so I don’t have to be a football (or basketball or soccer or baseball…) widow during certain seasons of the year.
When big games come up I am faced with a dilemma. Do I watch the game and enjoy time with people (and the food
) or do I just decide to hang out on my own and let those who are really into the event watch it. The obvious answer to that is to suck it up and go watch the game!
If you’re like me then you’re in luck! The Superbowl is coming up and I have a few tried and true tips for how you can enjoy game day without REALLY watching the game.
Rate the Commercials
Everyone knows the commercials are the best part of the Superbowl! Decide on a rating system with your friends and family before the game begins and figure out as a group based on your rating system which commercial was the absolute best. Not only does this ensure that the competitive people in your group who are actually there to watch the game will keep quiet during the commercials but it also allows you to see if the professionals who rate Superbowl commercials are right.
Enjoy Tasty Food
Food is absolutely imperative to each and every Superbowl party! Who wants to sit around watching sporting events without a tasty treat in their hands? The good new is, tasty treats do NOT have to be decedent or even cooked! Some of my favorite treats are chips and salsa or popcorn
! I just tried a few flavors of BOOMCHICKAPOP
popcorn for the first time a few days ago and, let me tell you, I am hooked! We have a little bit of a popcorn compitition at my house since I’m a huge fan of white cheddar
and Nate’s more of a kettle corn
kind of guy. Thankfully that means we don’t have to share. On game day I would highly recommend picking up a bag of BOOMCHICKAPOP
white cheddar popcorn (or another flavor if you want to be difficult) and a sweet treat like chocolate, butterscotch or mint and mix them together while you’re munching. Delectable!
Play Your Own Game
If you’re expecting the people who are actually there to watch the Superbowl to keep quiet during the commercials for you then you need to also respect them enough to focus a little bit on the game. What better way than to make it a game for you? Each time a touchdown is made shout “I’m King of the World.” Make it so you can only eat your popcorn treat
when a first down happens. Finish whatever drink is in front of you whenever an interception occurs. Use those rules or make up different ones and have fun!
Host a Tailgating Party Beforehand
Since the game watchers are respecting you and keeping quiet during the commercials and you’re respecting the game watchers and paying attention to the game there doesn’t seem to be a lot of time for real conversations. I’m all about the real conversations. How do you fix that? Host a tailgating party before the game begins! I know that most people are nowhere near the actual stadium and, even if you were, you wouldn’t have bought tickets because you don’t enjoy watching sports but you can totally still tailgate. Pick a parking lot and get the atmosphere going! Bring food, music, the works! Must make sure you make it home in time for the game to begin!
