Do What Brings You Joy
Mama question of the day – when do you take time to do things that bring you joy?
The other day I was at MOPS and the speaker shared with us that when she had young kids she was so bogged down with caring for them, chores, and being a good wife that she never did anything for herself. I could totally relate! I have to work hard to remember that I need to make time for me in day to day life. Her solution was to use nap time to do things that she couldn’t do while her kids were awake. During that time she learned to sew and began her lifelong love of quilting. She’s now a grandmother and still enjoys quilting – a craft she’d never have discovered if she was bogged down by a to-do list during nap time.
I’d take her advice a step further, though. The realization I’ve come to is that I need to only allow myself to do things that bring me joy during nap time. Sometimes what brings me joy is blogging. Sometimes it’s crafting. Sometimes, honestly, it’s folding the laundry that has been sitting in my dryer for three days.
If I got caught up in the “rule” that I could only do things I couldn’t do while Caleb was awake during nap time I could sometimes be so stressed out that I wouldn’t get joy out of the hobby I was taking part in. Sometimes there is joy in finishing a chore that’s been put off for days.
I would encourage you to start the same routine. The next time your little one goes down for a nap, think about what would bring you joy. If it’s taking a nap, do it! If it’s working on a project, do it! If it’s watching a TV show, do it! If it’s reading your Bible, do it! If it’s cleaning the kitchen, do it! Forget about your to-do list and focus on joy.
The to-do list can wait.
What do you do that brings you joy?
