I never planned on being a work at home mama. In my dream world I imagined that I would be the ultimate stay at home mom. I would be the mom who always kept her house perfectly clean. I would be the mom who always had fresh cookies coming out of the oven. I would have my kid(s) be involved in every activity and happily drive them around. I would be on the leadership team for their activities and love every second of it. Basically I wanted to be a mom straight out of Leave it to Beaver so something of that nature.
Looking back, a life like that sounds totally exhausting and boring all rolled into one. Always having cookies in my house would make both Nate and I weigh more than we already do and we certainly don’t need that. Keeping myself engaged only in my kid(s) activities would show them that they are the center of my life, not simply a wonderful part of my life. And, most of all, I don’t enjoy cleaning so why would I want to devote my days to that?? (Yes, I do clean… But only because I have to) I have my own goals and dreams that are outside my son and, even though I want to be a consistent presence in his life and love that I get to stay home with him, I love that I can pursue my creative passions and teach Caleb even from a young age that women can, and should, be active in working toward the dreams the Lord has placed in her heart.
All of that is well and good until you get down to the nitty-gritty truth of the matter – I’m a work-at-home mom with a toddler boy who has already been to the Emergency Room three times in his little life (Read: He’s total dare devil but a total klutz!) If I want to get anything done while he’s awake I need some help!

Let me introduce you to the VTech Safe&Sound VM342 Digital Video Monitor with Wide-Angle Lens and Standard Lens. (Say that five times fast) You guys, this product is a total game changer! Caleb (aka. Mr Independent) doesn’t like always being in the same room with me while I’m working. He loves wandering the house and, most of the time, that’s totally fine. I just shut the doors to the rooms he’s not allowed in by himself, make sure the other rooms are toddler proofed, and he’s good to go. I’ve gotten to the point where I can hear a new noise and pretty much instantly tell you what he’s gotten himself into.
Caleb’s room, though, is getting to be a challenge. He adores playing in his room but also adores climbing. This kid has been climbing since before he could walk and it can get scary! You know, fall and bite your tongue in half scary. (Not that that’s happened to him before…) Sure, his furniture is all anchored to the wall, but I still don’t trust that I won’t go into his room sometime and find him sitting on the top of his bookshelf or banging on the window while sitting on his changing table.
Instead of fighting his desire to play in his room, installing the VM342 allows me to keep an eye on him while being able to get work done too! He thinks I’m allowing him some independence, I’m getting work done, and we’re both happy.
I love that, with the VM342 I am able to see and hear my little guy from any room in the house. The full-color video and automatic night vision are exactly what I want out of a video monitor and I love the wide angle lens attachment because it allows for me to see all of Caleb’s room on the screen! This thing is absolutely ideal for the stage of life we’re in right now!
I’m also totally excited to use this monitor for any future baby Kelloggs that come along! Up to three cameras can hook up to the one monitor so I’m excited that I’ll be able to keep my eye on little Caleb and his future brother and/or sister(s) all at the same time! The soothing sounds, lullabies, and two-way talk-back intercom will all be perfect for a future baby… And are great when I have to tell Caleb not to do something. I think he thinks it’s God talking to him. 😉
